Randolph
County, North
Carolina is in the foothills of the striking Uwharrie
Mountains of the Greensboro-High
Point metro area. Located in the geographic center
of North Carolina, Randolph features 790 square miles of
gently rolling hills, forests and lush river valleys.
Named for Peyton
Randolph, the first president of the Continental
Congress, Randolph County formed in 1779 from Guilford
County.
Randolph County, NC lies within 90 miles of the
majestic Blue
Ridge Mountains to the west and is 200 miles from
the shores of the Atlantic
Ocean. Situated in the heart of the Eastern
Seaboard, Randolph County has an easy connection to half
of America’s
population and numerous significant business markets
within a 500-mile radius. As part of the six-county Piedmont
Triad region, Randolph County, NC residents have
convenient access to a modern interstate highway
infrastructure, numerous higher learning facilities and
the Piedmont
Triad International Airport.
The population of Randolph County, according to the
2000 Census data, was 130,454. Randolph County ranks as NC’s
11th largest county and has the state’s 17th highest
population. Randolph County divides into 22 townships
and several cities and towns. Larger cities include Archdale,
Asheboro
and Trinity.
Towns with less than 4,000 residents include Franklinville,
Liberty,
Ramseur,
Randleman,
Seagrove
and Staley.
Asheboro,
the county seat and center of commerce, sits 70 miles
from the dynamic City
of Charlotte and Raleigh,
the NC State Capital. Asheboro, NC is home to the North
Carolina State Zoological Park and Randolph
Community College. There are several additional
colleges and universities nearby, such as High
Point University, North
Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University
in Greensboro,
University
of North Carolina at Greensboro, Wake
Forest University in Winston-Salem
and Winston-Salem
State University.
Renowned as a leading center of manufacturing,
industries such as apparel, furniture and textiles have
traditionally driven the thriving economy. In recent
years, a transformation of the economic base began to
include more agriculture and technologically based
sectors. Major Randolph County employers include Randolph
County Schools, Klaussner
Furniture Industries, Energizer
Battery Co. and Randolph
Hospital.
Randolph County, North Carolina is full of cultural
entertainment and recreational activities. The area
boasts eight local golf
courses, with easy access to numerous other greens
within an hour’s drive. Lake Lucas, Deep
River and Lake Reese provide ideal sites for year
round fishing and water play. Its situation in the
foothills of the Uwharrie Mountains affords excellent
opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and hunting.
The Uwharrie region remains stocked with pheasants and a
wide variety of additional game birds. Sports
enthusiasts will appreciate the events of the Asheboro
Copperheads and Caraway
Speedway. Randolph County, NC is also home to the Richard
Petty Museum and the Victory
Junction Gang Camp. Founded by NASCAR's
beloved Petty family, this 65-acre facility near
Randleman offers camping experiences for chronically ill
children.
